The problem

Ten minutes at a machine can ruin the first hour of a trip.

At Shinjuku Station, we watched a family spend over ten minutes stuck at the ticket machine — unsure which button meant their destination, whether they needed a new ticket or just more balance on their card. A staff member stepped in to help. The line behind them kept growing.

Japan's ticket machines already show multiple languages. The problem isn't the words on screen — it's knowing which screen to go to next.
